    Took up weightlifting in a local spare-time sports school in 1976. Chosen by the provincial weightlifting team in 1981 and then by the Army's "August 1st" team. Joined the national team in 1983.

    By winning the 52kg class weightlifting at the 23rd Olympic Games in 1984 Zeng Guoqiang became China's first Olympic gold medallist in weightlifting.
